How to Clean a Berber Carpet Yourself in Marrakech
Updated September 18, 2026
Daily maintenance and the limits of home cleaning for a wool Berber carpet
A wool Berber carpet is resilient, but poorly maintained it quickly loses its colors and its texture. Here is how to care for it yourself on a daily basis — and when it is better to call a professional rather than risk damaging the wool.
Routine maintenance, done at home
- Shake the carpet outside once a week to remove sand, which is very present in Marrakech.
- Vacuum in the direction of the fibers, never against the grain, to avoid breaking the knots.
- For a fresh stain, blot immediately (never rub) with a dry cloth, then a little warm water.
- Avoid any ammonia- or bleach-based product: they irreversibly discolor natural wool.
- Dry it flat, never hung while wet, to prevent it from losing its shape.
The limits of home cleaning
The vacuum and sponge remove surface dirt, but not dust mites, sand residues embedded in the weave, or old grease or tea stains. Over-wetting without professional extraction can also cause the wool to shrink or felt.
When to call a professional
If the carpet has not been deep-cleaned in over a year, or if it is exposed to sand and frequent foot traffic, a professional steam cleaning once or twice a year extends its lifespan by several years. Dima Clean tests color fastness before intervention and adjusts steam pressure to each type of wool — see the service details and pricing.
