Vacuum or Professional Cleaning: What Does Each Really Do for a Carpet or Sofa?
Updated September 18, 2026
Understanding the difference so you do not wait until it is too late
A good vacuum is essential day to day — but it does not do the same job as a professional cleaning, and many people wait until a carpet or sofa is visibly dirty before understanding the difference.
What a vacuum does well
It removes surface dust, sand, and particles. Used regularly, it slows fiber wear and limits superficial odors.
What a vacuum does not do
- It does not remove dust mites or allergens embedded deep in the fiber
- It does not dissolve already dry stains (coffee, grease, sweat)
- It does not disinfect — it moves dust around, it does not eliminate it in a sanitary sense
- On a thick wool Berber carpet, it often only reaches the first centimeter of fiber
The sign it is time to switch to a professional
If your carpet or sofa has not had a deep cleaning in more than 6 to 12 months, or if an odor persists despite vacuuming, that is the sign the dirt has reached a layer the vacuum can no longer touch.
The concrete difference
The steam injection-extraction cleaning we use combines heat, adapted product, and pressurized extraction — it dislodges what a vacuum leaves in place, with drying in just 2 to 4 hours. It is not a replacement for your daily vacuuming routine, it is its complement once or twice a year. See our prices.
